Excerpt from ATTACKS
By Field Marshal Erwin Rommel
The Fight At Longarone
The situation in which
we found ourselves was one which did not present itself to many soldiers
during World War I. Thousands of the enemy, retreating in orderly fashion
in a narrow valley hemmed in to the right and left by unscalable mountains
sixty-six hundred feet high, were in complete ignorance of the danger
which threatened their flank.
